Central Battery Systems remain a popular choice for supplying power to emergency lighting particularly in larger premises with 100 or more emergency luminaires.  The main reasons for this are:

1) A central battery system will maintain the condition of it’s battery by trickle charging, this gives a big reduction in power consumption compared to the constant current chargers of self-contained emergency lights.  The larger the number of fittings the bigger the saving.

2) Central systems are easier and cheaper to maintain particularly as the life of the central battery is so much longer than that of batteries in self-contained fittings.

3) Centrally powered emergency lights and conversion kits operate at higher Ballast Lumen Factors than self-contained emergency lights so you may need far less of them to provide a system conforming to BS5266.
